Drekce's MP3 Directory Maker
Click here to get the software
Simple Directions:
Extract the two files from the zip file. Make sure that you have Java 1.4.2 or greater installed and have the path set correctly.
(If you need help with Java go to https://java.sun.com)
Double click on the "run.bat" file to start the program.
When the GUI comes up everything should be self explanitory. You select the source directory (the root directory where your files are stored) and the target directory (where you want the new directories created) first. I usually make these two directories the same so that the new folders are created in the same place as my music currently exists.
NOTE: When you click the start button the program will physically move your files to the new directory structure. This cannot be undone, so make sure you have everything set the way you want it before you click start. If files are moved incorrectly you can fix their ID3 tags and rerun the software to adjust the directories again.
In the "select file types" box you have to highlight "mp3" or nothing will happen. The reason that I have that there is so that I can add additional file types in the future and the user will be able to pick and choose only those he wants to change.
If you want to traverse the subdirectories in your root directory check the button. Unless you store your MP3s in one flat folder you probably need to check this.
If you want the program to automatically delete any empty directories check the box. When files are moved it generally causes the old directories to be emptied out, so thsi will clean up those messes for you.
The last setting is choosing how you want the new directories created. You can choose from the following options:
Artist/Album : /base directory/Third Eye Blind/Blue
Album : /base directory/Blue
Album/Artist : /base directory/Blue/Third Eye Blind
Now Click Start. A dialog box will pop up and tell you the number of files moved when it is complete.
Additional Notes: If mp3s are read that do not have tag data or if the tag contains characters that cannot be put into a filename then those files will be moved to a directory called "ERROR." Fix the tags and rerun the program to clean everything up.
If the directories are not created as you wanted make sure the tags are correct and complete and rerun the program. This program WILL NOT delete your files, it just moves them around, so don't worry about losing anything.
